August 2024 Update:
In the 8/14/24 5B Transportation and Public Space Committee Meeting, DDOT planners Anne Welch and Michael Alvino presented plans for a northern-aligned cycle track or a southern-aligned cycle track. You can see their presentation here. DDOT is now through the “needs assessment” phase and in the “Concept” phase.
We support the southern-alignment as it offers more safety due to less curb-cuts, alleyways, and driveways and it also preserves more parking for our neighbors.
DDOT Project website can be viewed here.
Our advocacy must continue until the concrete barriers & flexposts are in the ground!
This is just the beginning, and there will be multiple phases of design and community input.
How You Can Help:
Please use the scrolling link above to email DDOT to express your support for the southern-alignment.
We are encouraging DDOT to address the following specific issues in their plans:
A safe connection all the way across South Dakota Ave NE. Bunker Hill Elem. School’s boundary extends to Eastern Ave, so school children and their caregivers must be able to safely get across South Dakota Ave and travel the 1400-1600 blocks of Taylor in a protected lane that meets DDOTs own minimums.
the need for a safe, integrated connection through the "cloverleaf" of Taylor onto John McCormack Dr and onto the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT). This is a heavy truck route due to the dump/transfer station and trucks and bikers should not be mixing at this interchange. Encourage DDOT to close one of the two cloverleaves to vehicles.
the importance of DDOT moving forward with a road diet on South Dakota Ave that includes Bike Lanes! This is necessary to fill in infrastructure gaps throughout Ward 5
Thank you for your continued support and advocacy!
